Windy morning on Lake Superior

It had rained hard during the night and started clearing around sunrise.  The breaking clouds were beautiful blues, grays, and soft orange tones as they swiftly blew in off of Lake Superior.  White caps on the choppy waves could be seen far out onto the lake and as they rushed ashore.  Grand Marias’s north light station is on the horizon.  With this image, I wanted to capture the vastness of the view I had, of the broad expanse of the lake and big sky.

Winter storm approaching Detroit

Detroit is a wonderful place.  A city that is going through some re-growth challenges with success and seeing a sincere light ahead.  It doesn’t matter whether it’s a winter storm approaching or the opinion of the unaware and inexperienced outsiders, Detroit is strong and maintains its beauty… in the face of everything coming its way and the challenges already undertaken.  This is just a simple photo that, I feel, captures the strength of the city and its solidarity brought together by its people.

Scenic view near the end of Wilderness Park Drive

Early morning along the edge of Lake Michigan and the Mackinac Straits.  The full 5-mile stretch of the Mackinac Bridge connecting the tips of Michigan’s lower and upper peninsulas are seen here, along with a passing gull.  No one else was around.  Very quiet with a cold breeze coming off the water.

Four gulls on the breakwall

Four gulls on the breakwall

After stopping at Lake Muskallonge then driving west along Lake Superior I headed for Grand Marais.  I’d never been there before but found it a nice town and very comfortable.  After lunch and some good beer at the Dunes Saloon Lake Superior Brewing Co. I headed for the very edge of town toward the breakwall and Lake Superior to see what photo opps lie ahead.  Great waves on Lake Superior, but these gulls didn’t seem to care.  They relaxed atop the breakwall as waves repeatedly splashed along.  The colorful tones of the water and rigid line of the wall made a fun composition.

Laker on the horizon

Laker on the horizon

Jill, Karen, and I stopped to visit McGulpin Point lighthouse but it wasn’t open for visitors until the following week.  So we walked the short distance along the path through the woods to the water.  Lake Michigan’s northeastern most tip makes up this part of the Mackinac Straits.  On the horizon I saw a laker making its way, seemingly so slowly, along the top of the water while whitecapped waves washed upon the shore toward us.
