Sunny afternoon

Nothing like a nice red wine on a sunny weekend afternoon.  My glass was showing reflections of so many things… the sun, the clouds, the sun-kissed green grass and shade,  the deck railing, tiny speckles on the glass, the top of my head, the beautiful tones of the wine, maybe you see more.  And this little one seemed to also enjoy the view.

Reflections and textures (2)

I like textures and colors.  Leaves and flower pedals that have begun to wilt and shrivel display excellence in both.  This large flower pedal had dropped from a bouquet I bought from the grocery store and I set it on my desk for future photo opps.  Over the months, the pedal withered and its tones became more earthen and pronounced, its texture aged from velvety smooth to paper-like wrinkles.  Sitting at my desk working I noticed the reflections coming off my darkened cell phone screen.  I placed the aged pedal on the screen and liked what I saw.  I snapped several images with my camera and macro lens.

Textures of an old pedal

The same pedal from the still life.  I like the wrinkles, the whites, tans, and caramel tones and the main vein running diagonally through the center.  The lone water drop makes a fun focal point I continually return to as I follow the central vein’s meandering flow and bumps and the surface texture of the pedal in the front.

Fall leaves

Fall leaves

Taking a walk in Sterling State Park looking for birds and other interesting things I came across these leaves that had fallen on the walkway in their fall colors.  They became a graphic pattern as well as a golden ruddy set of evenly spaced leaves on the asphalt surface.  The give and take of the leaf faces and backings make a nice color dull color dull… pattern.

Line of light

Line of light

This is an example of noticing the interesting things around us, everyday occurrences in life that often go unrecognized.  Over the years I’m learning to see these subtleties, these beauties that happen in almost every nook and cranny and as small passages of larger landscapes of nature that are right in front of us.  Here, I’ve captured condensation on glass with the reflection of light on its surface.  I composed the image with the line of light centered amidst the field of dewy drops.

At St. Louis Cemetery No.1 (1)

2016_New_Orleans-0780

The above ground tombs in New Orleans are fascinating and rich in history and stories.  Newer tombs contrast with the older ones, like this one with chipped concrete, exposed bricks, lots of textures and small foliage growing from the cracks.  Though it was the middle of the afternoon on a warm sunny day, I took this picture while a cloud was in front of the sun and later added a little more dramatic mood on my computer.

Red wagon

Red wagon

There are two rustic buildings on the south stretch of the Cades Cove Loop: a house nearer to the road and a barn to the north or the house, both across the road from the Tipton Place.  The barn is a treasure of photo opps (for me anyway) and one of my favorites was this red wagon parked decades ago under the protection of the barn. Capturing the shaded tones within the barn from my vantage out in the afternoon sun was a challenge but I think I caught them in this shot.  Memorabilia from a simpler, albeit more challenging, lifestyle.

John Cable Mill

John Cable Mill

At the far west end of the Cades Cove Loop is the John Cable Mill, on the same grounds as the Becky Cable House, the Cades Cove Visitor Center, and the barn I liked so much for two barn shots below.  The Mill seems the epitomy of rustic; very old wood grayed from decades of weather, an old walkway to the water wheel, rock foundation visible next to the wheel.  Not that I’m an expert on rustic architecture… it just looks darn old and I could have spent several more hours there finding interesting areas on and around the Mill to shoot.

Barn still life (3)

Barn still life (3)

As I approached side of the barn I noticed this little moth and how it’s color blended nicely with the patina of the old wheel and barn implements, its delicate life so opposite to that of the aged iron.  More contrasts are shown with the arcs and points, lines and angles, soft light and tone and shadows.
