Soft fall sunrise

There were patches of fog in the lower lying areas on this crisp fall morning.  As I drove south on Highway 77 in the Upper Peninsula the sun glowed brightly through the fog where it was thinner.  I stopped to take some photos.  I really liked how the warm brightness graduated to the cool blue sky where the fog was even thinner, and the trees were silhouetted as they fade into the distance.

Sunny afternoon

Nothing like a nice red wine on a sunny weekend afternoon.  My glass was showing reflections of so many things… the sun, the clouds, the sun-kissed green grass and shade,  the deck railing, tiny speckles on the glass, the top of my head, the beautiful tones of the wine, maybe you see more.  And this little one seemed to also enjoy the view.

Toward Saint Mary’s Cathedral

After exploring Kilkenny Castle in the morning, we spent the afternoon walking about the town, mainly along High St.  We turned west onto Jame’s St. and found the bright afternoon sun directly ahead of us, casting Joan and Tori into backlit silhouettes as we strolled toward Saint Mary’s Cathedral.  The picture is nice in color as originally shot, but has a more dramatic feel in black and white.

Irish green under gray

Our family trip to Ireland and Scotland was a lot of fun and a wonderful time.  After two days of adventures in Dublin we drove to Kilkenny to enjoy the town and castle for two days.  On our drive back to Dublin, we took back roads and on N81 came upon River Liffey.  The clouds and their reflection on the water were gray, the grass on the hillside was lush, and where sunlight shone through it lit up the green hillside beautifully.

Morning over Hessel Marina boat launch

Morning over Hessel Marina boat launch

Very few boats at the Marina this time of year.  As I walked by the boat launch I noticed how the morning sun was directly aligned above the walkout and both could be centered in the composition between the sides of the launch.

Horses in the evening sun

Horses in the evening sun

Driving along a country road I noticed these horses grazing in the field.  I stopped my car and backed up to better see them from the road.  The evening sun was low and adding glare to the scene, lots of bugs flying around the horses that were backlit and didn’t seem to mind them.  On the computer I intentionally soften the contrast to accentuate the soft and peaceful feel of the scene.

Mercury transit

Mercury transit

I tried a few shots from my deck before going to work on this Thursday morning, to catch Mercury as it started its transit across the sun.  Too many trees to get a clean photo, though, so I took my camera with me to work.  I took this photo from the parking lot before walking into work.  Mercury is the small dot in the lower left of the sun.  The dark area near the center is a sunspot.

On an afternoon walk

On an afternoon walk

Driving back to the house along M134 I came upon the John Arthur Woollam Preserve.  I never realized it was there.  I pulled in and parked, studied the map of the Preserve and its walking trails that lead to Lake Huron, and decided to do some exploring.  I had the entire place to myself.  With the October afternoon sun lower in the sky, it glistened between the trees, through the leaves, and the shadows were longer.  And it was very quiet.  Walking the trail toward the lake, I enjoyed the blue sky and fall clouds that appeared through a clearing of trees that made a nice frame with the trail leading off into the trees further ahead.

Saint Vital Bay (2)

Saint Vital Bay (2)

A new favorite spot up north along the Lake Huron shoreline.  Secluded and quiet.  This sapling pine tree growing in the beach sand, eventually to do its part to extend the pine forest closer to the water’s edge.  For now, basking in the fall sun to store strength ahead of the pending winter.
