As the fog thins (1)

As the fog thins (1)

When we first got to this opening in Cades Cove, the fog was thick and we could barely see even a trace of the trees at the other end.  But seemingly in the next few minutes the fog began to thin.  Gradually, the subtle colors, pastels, of the morning began to appear.  This picture captured the essence of what I saw and felt as the scene unfolded, the fog receding.  Not a necessarily “popular” image on the mainstream photo sites, but it’s one of my favorites.  Which, really, is what is more important to me.

Red wagon

Red wagon

There are two rustic buildings on the south stretch of the Cades Cove Loop: a house nearer to the road and a barn to the north or the house, both across the road from the Tipton Place.  The barn is a treasure of photo opps (for me anyway) and one of my favorites was this red wagon parked decades ago under the protection of the barn. Capturing the shaded tones within the barn from my vantage out in the afternoon sun was a challenge but I think I caught them in this shot.  Memorabilia from a simpler, albeit more challenging, lifestyle.

John Cable Mill

John Cable Mill

At the far west end of the Cades Cove Loop is the John Cable Mill, on the same grounds as the Becky Cable House, the Cades Cove Visitor Center, and the barn I liked so much for two barn shots below.  The Mill seems the epitomy of rustic; very old wood grayed from decades of weather, an old walkway to the water wheel, rock foundation visible next to the wheel.  Not that I’m an expert on rustic architecture… it just looks darn old and I could have spent several more hours there finding interesting areas on and around the Mill to shoot.

Stream in the green

Stream in the green

This cascading stream through the woods of the Smokies was one of my favorite spots.  So quiet like the other areas we stopped at, I could stayed for hours enjoying the solitude and finding small treasures to photograph.
