Hessel Marina at dusk (1)

Hessel Marina at dusk (1)

I went to the Marina to take some evening time exposure shots of the town traffic.  This time of year with no tourists and on a Tuesday, though, Hessel is very quiet.  Traffic is but a car or two every few minutes so I instead wanted to capture the essence of just how quiet it can be here.  The dark figures near the water’s edge is a statue of a man and child.  The small reddish glow on the road is from the Islander Bar, the only establishment open this evening, and the reddish dot just above it is the only traffic light, marking the intersection with M134.

A quiet evening on the porch

A quiet evening on the porch

We sold the house so this is one of the last times I’ll be able to sit on the front porch and enjoy the quiet and the beautiful view of Hessel Bay.  It was a chilly evening but I just put on my heavier jacket.  A few breaks in the clouds at dusk let some post-sunset light peak through on the horizon.  The golden porch light gave a warm softness to the porch rails and overhang.

Quiet evening

Quiet evening

The lake was quiet, just some small ripples.  This 13 second exposure smoothed them even further.  Goose’s dock is in progress.  All is calm on this Friday evening, barely a sound but a distant fishing boat heading out from the marina.

Morning mist on the bay (3)

After packing up to head back home, I stepped out onto the porch to take in the fresh morning.  To the west I could see mist rising off the bay.  It was exciting, something I don’t recall seeing in Hessel before, though I’m sure it happens anytime conditions are right.  I grabbed my camera and took some pictures, hoping to capture the feel of the scene.  The sun had yet to rise and the dawn light was beautiful.

In the glow of a yellow bulb

In the glow of a yellow bulb

The porch light at the Hessel house has been burning gold for as long as I can remember.  It’s warm, homey; like Mom and Dad had it for years.  The house is basically empty now, even when I’m there.  Quiet, solitude, friendly, neighborly.  Lots of nice memories.
