Young lily pads toward the Light

I took my Argus 75 film camera to Crosswinds Marsh. It’s a fun camera that I bought for $10 at an antique store and the images have a unique look to them, if/when any of the photos actually turn out into something decent. This image of young lily pads under a blue spring sky with the glow of the sun above, and along the horizon, is one of those images from that camera I like.

Rain coming

Starting our walk in Kensington Metropark, we noticed the sky darkening to the west along with a small thinning area in the clouds that gave a soft glow near the horizon. Waves and banding in the clouds made for wonderful textures. The darkening sky reflected on the small lake and I remembered there was rain in the forecast. We continued our walk, albeit shortened.

Soft fall sunrise

There were patches of fog in the lower lying areas on this crisp fall morning.  As I drove south on Highway 77 in the Upper Peninsula the sun glowed brightly through the fog where it was thinner.  I stopped to take some photos.  I really liked how the warm brightness graduated to the cool blue sky where the fog was even thinner, and the trees were silhouetted as they fade into the distance.

The alter of Sweetest Heart of Mary Church

The alter of Sweetest Heart of Mary Church

It’s truly amazing inside the church.  This is the alter as seen from my position in a pew along the north side aisle about halfway toward the front.

Glistening through the pipes

Glistening through the pipes

This is a portion of the organ pipes of Sweetest Heart of Mary Church.  Though it was gray and cloudy outside, the lighting through the stained glass windows was still quite bright in contrast to this otherwise darker, naturally lit end of the church.

Hessel Marina at dusk (3)

Hessel Marina at dusk (3)

After taking pictures of the town from the dock, I turned around and saw this beautiful view of the Hessel Marina gazebo, the outer docks, and the vivid reflections.  The day’s final glow along the western horizon was quickly giving way to the night.  The sky was crystal clear and I could see Venus to the left of the gazebo.  An animal, possibly an otter or a mink, swam by just below me.

Before the sunrise (2)

Before the sunrise (2)

Looking at the dawn across the beach and pier I liked the soft glow of the lamps on the beach and walkway in the foreground, giving way to the darkness that’s out of reach, the green bench highlighted in seclusion under the lamp on the pier, then the beautiful colors in the pre-sunrise sky.  The clouds added texture and a bit of drama to the sky as they reach across my view.

One of my favorite spots for sunrises is Luna Pier, on Lake Erie close to the Ohio border.  They recently added this mock lighthouse that enhances the quaint Michigan feel to the already nicely kept pier and beach.  I came out expecting to catch some good sunrise color and cloud textures (from looking at Weather.com the night before) and was not disappointed.  As soon as I parked my Jeep I took the opportunity to catch this view of the lighthouse with the dawn’s early glow behind it.

Sandhill cranes sunrise flight (5)

Sandhill cranes sunrise flight (5)

Sandhill cranes migrate south every fall, making the Michigan Audobon Haehnle Bird Sanctuary one of their stopping points.  Thousands of sandhills begin to chatter, a few in the distance to the left, some more to the right, even before the sun rises on this cold morning.  In small groups, they begin their day’s journey, many of them heading for a breakfast stop in nearby fields before continuing.  These three cranes were at the front of their small pack.  I followed them with my camera from when I first saw them far across the marsh in front of me and as they crossed the sky to my left, catching them just as they flew behind some trees.
