Wading through flooded waters

This young buck slowly plodded through the flooded field this Saturday morning after long, heavy rains over night.   When I saw him I quickly grabbed my camera, whistled to catch his attention, and snapped a few pictures.  Fun photo app!  The buck didn’t pose long and continued his walk across the filed and behind the trees.

The cows made me smile

The cows made me smile

Leaving Sault Ste. Marie, I drove down the eastern coast of the UP because I hadn’t experienced it before.  Beautiful homes, beautiful views of the straits and Lake Nicolet until I reached a point where the roads forced me to head inward.  I happened upon a field at 15 Mile and Riverside where the cows were relaxing in the mid-afternoon grass.  I stopped to take their picture.  And something about the scene and their attitude and how the black one watched my every move and almost seemed to be posing.  It made me smile.

Outside Big D’s Diner

Outside Big D's Diner

On the way to visit my Mom and Dad at the cemetery, I stopped for breakfast in Pickford.  Good omelet, hash browns, and coffee… stop in if you’re ever in Pickford.  This dog was wondering about the field behind Big D’s having a good time.

Horses in the evening sun

Horses in the evening sun

Driving along a country road I noticed these horses grazing in the field.  I stopped my car and backed up to better see them from the road.  The evening sun was low and adding glare to the scene, lots of bugs flying around the horses that were backlit and didn’t seem to mind them.  On the computer I intentionally soften the contrast to accentuate the soft and peaceful feel of the scene.

Amish Tuesday afternoon

Amish Tuesday afternoon

A young girl working the field, turning over the hay to dry.  Her field and farm are directly behind a large tourist complex that boasts a gift shop with Amish goods and crafts and a family seating restaurant featuring Amish style cooking.  I wondered how this girl feels, if she is somehow on display or exploited here in the Amish countryside sprinkled with small towns and crowded with tourists.  I admit feeling a bit guilty watching her and taking pictures as she worked the field.

As the fog thins (2)

As the fog thins (2)

When we first got to this opening in Cades Cove, the fog was thick and we could barely see even an trace of the trees at the other end.  But seemingly in the next few minutes the fog began to thin out.  Gradually, the subtle colors, pastels, of the morning began to appear.  This picture captured the essence of what I saw and felt as the scene unfolded, the fog receding.  Not a necessarily “popular” image on the mainstream photo sites, but it’s one of my favorites.  Which, really, is what is more important to me.

Horses in the foggy pasture (2)

Horses in the foggy pasture (2)

In the morning fog, all was very quiet in this Cades Cove pasture except the occasional turkey gobble.  The horses further out being a bit hard, the trees even further almost invisible and all part of the mystic feel of the scene.

Early morning in Cades Cove, our last photo venture before driving home, we finally got the fog we wanted the entire trip.  The horses were out in the pasture, some like this one along the fence.
