Rain coming

Starting our walk in Kensington Metropark, we noticed the sky darkening to the west along with a small thinning area in the clouds that gave a soft glow near the horizon. Waves and banding in the clouds made for wonderful textures. The darkening sky reflected on the small lake and I remembered there was rain in the forecast. We continued our walk, albeit shortened.

Windy morning on Lake Superior

It had rained hard during the night and started clearing around sunrise.  The breaking clouds were beautiful blues, grays, and soft orange tones as they swiftly blew in off of Lake Superior.  White caps on the choppy waves could be seen far out onto the lake and as they rushed ashore.  Grand Marias’s north light station is on the horizon.  With this image, I wanted to capture the vastness of the view I had, of the broad expanse of the lake and big sky.

Sunny afternoon

Nothing like a nice red wine on a sunny weekend afternoon.  My glass was showing reflections of so many things… the sun, the clouds, the sun-kissed green grass and shade,  the deck railing, tiny speckles on the glass, the top of my head, the beautiful tones of the wine, maybe you see more.  And this little one seemed to also enjoy the view.

Scenic view near the end of Wilderness Park Drive

Scenic view near the end of Wilderness Park Drive

Early morning along the edge of Lake Michigan and the Mackinac Straits.  The full 5-mile stretch of the Mackinac Bridge connecting the tips of Michigan’s lower and upper peninsulas are seen here, along with a passing gull.  No one else was around.  Very quiet with a cold breeze coming off the water.

A quiet evening on the porch

A quiet evening on the porch

We sold the house so this is one of the last times I’ll be able to sit on the front porch and enjoy the quiet and the beautiful view of Hessel Bay.  It was a chilly evening but I just put on my heavier jacket.  A few breaks in the clouds at dusk let some post-sunset light peak through on the horizon.  The golden porch light gave a warm softness to the porch rails and overhang.

A view from Nisqually Vista

A view from Nisqually Vista

Great view of Mt. Rainier and the Nisqually Glacier from the Vista just a short walk from the Paradise Area Visitor Center.  I liked how the image seems to have three parts that make up this view:  the mountain top with bright snow and blue sky, a closer and lower ledge of the mountain covered in shaded snow, then the falls and streams leading down to the glacier framed by the pine trees.

Morning mist on the bay (3)

Morning mist on the bay (3)

After packing up to head back home, I stepped out onto the porch to take in the fresh morning.  To the west I could see mist rising off the bay.  It was exciting, something I don’t recall seeing in Hessel before, though I’m sure it happens anytime conditions are right.  I grabbed my camera and took some pictures, hoping to capture the feel of the scene.  The sun had yet to rise and the dawn light was beautiful.

On an afternoon walk

On an afternoon walk

Driving back to the house along M134 I came upon the John Arthur Woollam Preserve.  I never realized it was there.  I pulled in and parked, studied the map of the Preserve and its walking trails that lead to Lake Huron, and decided to do some exploring.  I had the entire place to myself.  With the October afternoon sun lower in the sky, it glistened between the trees, through the leaves, and the shadows were longer.  And it was very quiet.  Walking the trail toward the lake, I enjoyed the blue sky and fall clouds that appeared through a clearing of trees that made a nice frame with the trail leading off into the trees further ahead.
