The alter of Sweetest Heart of Mary Church

The alter of Sweetest Heart of Mary Church

It’s truly amazing inside the church.  This is the alter as seen from my position in a pew along the north side aisle about halfway toward the front.

Glistening through the pipes

Glistening through the pipes

This is a portion of the organ pipes of Sweetest Heart of Mary Church.  Though it was gray and cloudy outside, the lighting through the stained glass windows was still quite bright in contrast to this otherwise darker, naturally lit end of the church.

The balcony

The balcony

The balcony in Sweetest Heart of Mary Church in Detroit is used as the choir and organ loft.  The natural light coming through the stained glass windows along the sides of the church softly highlight the lines of the balcony’s wooden railing against the shadows.  I chose an angle and exposure to give me this sweeping shape across the image with stark contrasts of subtle lighting and lots of shadow.

Looking up the north portal

Looking up the north portal

At Sweetest Heart of Mary Church in Detroit, I looked up the north portal and liked how the cloudy gray sky was defused but bright enough to suggest the heavenly light.  I applied the same technique I used in September with my photo “Conservatory with early morning sun (2)” wherein I added a light gradient tone from the top to emphasize the heavenly effect.

Crossroads

2016_Heritage_Park-0117

At Heritage Park in Taylor, MI, the Little Wedding Chapel stands bright on this warm sunny afternoon.  I noticed two vapor trails crossing and moved to see if I could get the crossing of the trails to cross with the tip of the steeple.  I didn’t have to walk far to catch this.
