Tabletop still life

Sitting at the kitchen table on Christmas Eve at Alex and Danielle’s, I noticed the sheen on the table, the papers, reflections in the wine glass, and wonderful effects of the natural lighting.  I took several pictures, and upon reviewing them back home I liked this wide, black and white perspective.  The dark contrast edges framing the softer background in the center and clean reflections in the wine glass stem, base, and cells phone glass, all floating on the softness of the table surface.

Soft fall sunrise

There were patches of fog in the lower lying areas on this crisp fall morning.  As I drove south on Highway 77 in the Upper Peninsula the sun glowed brightly through the fog where it was thinner.  I stopped to take some photos.  I really liked how the warm brightness graduated to the cool blue sky where the fog was even thinner, and the trees were silhouetted as they fade into the distance.

Lily pads on the sun soaked marsh

Standing on the boardwalk and enjoying the late summer morning at Crosswinds Marsh, I enjoyed the sun glaring on the water as I looked at the lily pads and underwater plants.  To emphasize the contrast of the bright sunlight reflection and the soft shadows underneath, I chose to present the image as black and white.  There’s a peaceful play happening between the lights and darks.

Morning fog in the yard

I like the peaceful glow of the morning fog.  I took this picture with a film camera to capture the deeper part of my yard fading from view with the softer image quality attributed from film images.  The distant glow is framed by the subtle tones of the trees and grass closer to me, and Hugo sticking his head through the deck spindles.

Water in the deep woods

This is a pond, or possibly a lot of standing water after the heavy rains we had recently.  But I think it’s a pond higher than usual from the rains.  Regardless, the water was very calm this afternoon and the greens, shadows, and clean reflections caught my attention.  I chose an angle in which the nearer branches and leaves framed my image and set the exposure to be slightly longer to accentuate peacefulness.

The pipes at St. Giles’ Cathedral

Organ pipes are fabulous in the right lighting and environment.  The way they’re arranged and reach skyward, metal or wood, their surrounding airy openness or structural containments, all add to the beauty that catches my eye.  Here at St. Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh, not knowing what I would find as I explored, the pipes’ sheen and inspiring grandeur caught my eye immediately as I walked further through the aisles.  They shone with a bright softness in the natural light that cast delicate shadows on the pipes and surrounding South Transept, the ruddy toned Austrian oak encasement and cross design of the central metal pipes.
