Foggy duck morning (2)

Heavy rains flood the low-lying portion of my backyard, essentially turning it into a pond.  The ducks and geese love it.  Thick fog over the flooded yard on this early Tuesday morning created a wonderful, quiet, ethereal feeling that I tried to capture along with the delighted ducks.

Watching the wonder of the waning sunset

The sun’s glow became orange as the sun set deeper and the sky grew darker.  Soft rays reached out, stars came out, and the grassy dune in front of me was now a silhouette.  I noticed someone else taking pictures of the sunset, appearing very small in the distance at the peak of the dune.  The scale of the other photographer in relation to the expanse of the scene tells a wonderful story about  man’s place in our small corner of the universe.

Windy morning on Lake Superior

It had rained hard during the night and started clearing around sunrise.  The breaking clouds were beautiful blues, grays, and soft orange tones as they swiftly blew in off of Lake Superior.  White caps on the choppy waves could be seen far out onto the lake and as they rushed ashore.  Grand Marias’s north light station is on the horizon.  With this image, I wanted to capture the vastness of the view I had, of the broad expanse of the lake and big sky.

Irish green under gray

Our family trip to Ireland and Scotland was a lot of fun and a wonderful time.  After two days of adventures in Dublin we drove to Kilkenny to enjoy the town and castle for two days.  On our drive back to Dublin, we took back roads and on N81 came upon River Liffey.  The clouds and their reflection on the water were gray, the grass on the hillside was lush, and where sunlight shone through it lit up the green hillside beautifully.

Early morning along the edge of Lake Michigan and the Mackinac Straits.  The full 5-mile stretch of the Mackinac Bridge connecting the tips of Michigan’s lower and upper peninsulas are seen here, along with a passing gull.  No one else was around.  Very quiet with a cold breeze coming off the water.

Hessel Marina at dusk (3)

Hessel Marina at dusk (3)

After taking pictures of the town from the dock, I turned around and saw this beautiful view of the Hessel Marina gazebo, the outer docks, and the vivid reflections.  The day’s final glow along the western horizon was quickly giving way to the night.  The sky was crystal clear and I could see Venus to the left of the gazebo.  An animal, possibly an otter or a mink, swam by just below me.

Hessel Marina at dusk (1)

I went to the Marina to take some evening time exposure shots of the town traffic.  This time of year with no tourists and on a Tuesday, though, Hessel is very quiet.  Traffic is but a car or two every few minutes so I instead wanted to capture the essence of just how quiet it can be here.  The dark figures near the water’s edge is a statue of a man and child.  The small reddish glow on the road is from the Islander Bar, the only establishment open this evening, and the reddish dot just above it is the only traffic light, marking the intersection with M134.

Morning over Hessel Marina boat launch

Morning over Hessel Marina boat launch

Very few boats at the Marina this time of year.  As I walked by the boat launch I noticed how the morning sun was directly aligned above the walkout and both could be centered in the composition between the sides of the launch.

A quiet evening on the porch

A quiet evening on the porch

We sold the house so this is one of the last times I’ll be able to sit on the front porch and enjoy the quiet and the beautiful view of Hessel Bay.  It was a chilly evening but I just put on my heavier jacket.  A few breaks in the clouds at dusk let some post-sunset light peak through on the horizon.  The golden porch light gave a warm softness to the porch rails and overhang.

Four gulls on the breakwall

Four gulls on the breakwall

After stopping at Lake Muskallonge then driving west along Lake Superior I headed for Grand Marais.  I’d never been there before but found it a nice town and very comfortable.  After lunch and some good beer at the Dunes Saloon Lake Superior Brewing Co. I headed for the very edge of town toward the breakwall and Lake Superior to see what photo opps lie ahead.  Great waves on Lake Superior, but these gulls didn’t seem to care.  They relaxed atop the breakwall as waves repeatedly splashed along.  The colorful tones of the water and rigid line of the wall made a fun composition.
