Tabletop still life

Sitting at the kitchen table on Christmas Eve at Alex and Danielle’s, I noticed the sheen on the table, the papers, reflections in the wine glass, and wonderful effects of the natural lighting.  I took several pictures, and upon reviewing them back home I liked this wide, black and white perspective.  The dark contrast edges framing the softer background in the center and clean reflections in the wine glass stem, base, and cells phone glass, all floating on the softness of the table surface.

The sand bar sound

These swans shown bright in the morning sun against the marsh water.  I pushed the contrast in this image to give an almost angelic quality to the swans while holding onto the soft details within the darker passages.

Sunny afternoon

Nothing like a nice red wine on a sunny weekend afternoon.  My glass was showing reflections of so many things… the sun, the clouds, the sun-kissed green grass and shade,  the deck railing, tiny speckles on the glass, the top of my head, the beautiful tones of the wine, maybe you see more.  And this little one seemed to also enjoy the view.

Reflections and textures (2)

I like textures and colors.  Leaves and flower pedals that have begun to wilt and shrivel display excellence in both.  This large flower pedal had dropped from a bouquet I bought from the grocery store and I set it on my desk for future photo opps.  Over the months, the pedal withered and its tones became more earthen and pronounced, its texture aged from velvety smooth to paper-like wrinkles.  Sitting at my desk working I noticed the reflections coming off my darkened cell phone screen.  I placed the aged pedal on the screen and liked what I saw.  I snapped several images with my camera and macro lens.

Japanese maple leaf (1)

After a spring rain I noticed the brilliant red of the Japanese maple leaf that had fallen onto a beautifully green leaf of a plant below the tree.  With the freshness of the rain the colors were vivid and the leaves shimmered from the wet and the soil was dark.  Since nature had provided such a wonderful display of shapes, textures, colors, and sheen, I just had to come up with a composition I liked.

The pipes at St. Giles’ Cathedral

Organ pipes are fabulous in the right lighting and environment.  The way they’re arranged and reach skyward, metal or wood, their surrounding airy openness or structural containments, all add to the beauty that catches my eye.  Here at St. Giles’ Cathedral in Edinburgh, not knowing what I would find as I explored, the pipes’ sheen and inspiring grandeur caught my eye immediately as I walked further through the aisles.  They shone with a bright softness in the natural light that cast delicate shadows on the pipes and surrounding South Transept, the ruddy toned Austrian oak encasement and cross design of the central metal pipes.

A bench in the woods

Taking a walk along the trail that circles the pond at Maybury State Park, I came across a bench set just off the trail and among the trees.  It looks like a nice place to take in the beautiful park, gather your thoughts, have a quiet conversation, or simply listen to nature.  With the afternoon sun getting lower, I liked how the two parallel tree shadows reach out to hold the bench.

Euphorbia colors

At the Matthieu Botanical Conservatory, I saw this wonderful pattern of soft white with lavender lacing on a ridge of a Euphorbia plant.  The small heads protruding along the ridge remind me of snails peaking out.

By the tracks (2)

Another picture I took of Joan walking along the tracks under M14.  She stopped to see where I was.  I had slowed my pace to take pictures of scenes and images as they presented themselves.  Here, I saw Joan standing at the side of the tracks looking back for me along the curve.

Glistening through the pipes

Glistening through the pipes

This is a portion of the organ pipes of Sweetest Heart of Mary Church.  Though it was gray and cloudy outside, the lighting through the stained glass windows was still quite bright in contrast to this otherwise darker, naturally lit end of the church.
