Face off

This raccoon was enjoying the bird seed I put out and wandered a little across the deck rail.  Eli and Macy saw the raccoon and the raccoon saw them, but seemed to realize the window provided a safety shield between them so didn’t care much.  Nonetheless, it was an exciting few moments for my dogs who then ran out through the doggy door.  The raccoon scampered down the railing and under the deck before Eli and Macy reached it.

Wading through flooded waters

This young buck slowly plodded through the flooded field this Saturday morning after long, heavy rains over night.   When I saw him I quickly grabbed my camera, whistled to catch his attention, and snapped a few pictures.  Fun photo app!  The buck didn’t pose long and continued his walk across the filed and behind the trees.

Foggy duck morning (2)

Heavy rains flood the low-lying portion of my backyard, essentially turning it into a pond.  The ducks and geese love it.  Thick fog over the flooded yard on this early Tuesday morning created a wonderful, quiet, ethereal feeling that I tried to capture along with the delighted ducks.

Morning fog in the yard

I like the peaceful glow of the morning fog.  I took this picture with a film camera to capture the deeper part of my yard fading from view with the softer image quality attributed from film images.  The distant glow is framed by the subtle tones of the trees and grass closer to me, and Hugo sticking his head through the deck spindles.

The sand bar sound

These swans shown bright in the morning sun against the marsh water.  I pushed the contrast in this image to give an almost angelic quality to the swans while holding onto the soft details within the darker passages.

Sunny afternoon

Nothing like a nice red wine on a sunny weekend afternoon.  My glass was showing reflections of so many things… the sun, the clouds, the sun-kissed green grass and shade,  the deck railing, tiny speckles on the glass, the top of my head, the beautiful tones of the wine, maybe you see more.  And this little one seemed to also enjoy the view.

Four gulls on the breakwall

Four gulls on the breakwall

After stopping at Lake Muskallonge then driving west along Lake Superior I headed for Grand Marais.  I’d never been there before but found it a nice town and very comfortable.  After lunch and some good beer at the Dunes Saloon Lake Superior Brewing Co. I headed for the very edge of town toward the breakwall and Lake Superior to see what photo opps lie ahead.  Great waves on Lake Superior, but these gulls didn’t seem to care.  They relaxed atop the breakwall as waves repeatedly splashed along.  The colorful tones of the water and rigid line of the wall made a fun composition.

The cows made me smile

The cows made me smile

Leaving Sault Ste. Marie, I drove down the eastern coast of the UP because I hadn’t experienced it before.  Beautiful homes, beautiful views of the straits and Lake Nicolet until I reached a point where the roads forced me to head inward.  I happened upon a field at 15 Mile and Riverside where the cows were relaxing in the mid-afternoon grass.  I stopped to take their picture.  And something about the scene and their attitude and how the black one watched my every move and almost seemed to be posing.  It made me smile.

Outside Big D’s Diner

Outside Big D's Diner

On the way to visit my Mom and Dad at the cemetery, I stopped for breakfast in Pickford.  Good omelet, hash browns, and coffee… stop in if you’re ever in Pickford.  This dog was wondering about the field behind Big D’s having a good time.

Essence of a dove

Essence of a dove

I put bird seed on our deck and every now and then, unfortunately, the birds see the glass of our sunroom as more of the sky.  Here, a dove hit our window and left its mark.  The dove flew off (I’m sure with a headache) and I was fascinated by the detail of the impression it left on our window, including a bit of down.  I enhanced the contrast a little to bring out the olive and gray-blue tones behind, and in doing so how dirty our window is.  I guess I have some cleaning to do.
