Young lily pads toward the Light

I took my Argus 75 film camera to Crosswinds Marsh. It’s a fun camera that I bought for $10 at an antique store and the images have a unique look to them, if/when any of the photos actually turn out into something decent. This image of young lily pads under a blue spring sky with the glow of the sun above, and along the horizon, is one of those images from that camera I like.

Rain coming

Starting our walk in Kensington Metropark, we noticed the sky darkening to the west along with a small thinning area in the clouds that gave a soft glow near the horizon. Waves and banding in the clouds made for wonderful textures. The darkening sky reflected on the small lake and I remembered there was rain in the forecast. We continued our walk, albeit shortened.

Face off

This raccoon was enjoying the bird seed I put out and wandered a little across the deck rail.  Eli and Macy saw the raccoon and the raccoon saw them, but seemed to realize the window provided a safety shield between them so didn’t care much.  Nonetheless, it was an exciting few moments for my dogs who then ran out through the doggy door.  The raccoon scampered down the railing and under the deck before Eli and Macy reached it.

Wading through flooded waters

This young buck slowly plodded through the flooded field this Saturday morning after long, heavy rains over night.   When I saw him I quickly grabbed my camera, whistled to catch his attention, and snapped a few pictures.  Fun photo app!  The buck didn’t pose long and continued his walk across the filed and behind the trees.

Foggy duck morning (2)

Heavy rains flood the low-lying portion of my backyard, essentially turning it into a pond.  The ducks and geese love it.  Thick fog over the flooded yard on this early Tuesday morning created a wonderful, quiet, ethereal feeling that I tried to capture along with the delighted ducks.

Quiet bench by the river (2)

I enjoyed this quiet bend in the Huron River.  It was a very cold afternoon, light snow flurries gently drifting down, quiet.  The bench looked like a nice place to relax on a warmer day, though I thought about sitting for a few minutes but I was already too cold.  The tones and texture of the film gave this image just the right feel for me.

Tabletop still life

Sitting at the kitchen table on Christmas Eve at Alex and Danielle’s, I noticed the sheen on the table, the papers, reflections in the wine glass, and wonderful effects of the natural lighting.  I took several pictures, and upon reviewing them back home I liked this wide, black and white perspective.  The dark contrast edges framing the softer background in the center and clean reflections in the wine glass stem, base, and cells phone glass, all floating on the softness of the table surface.

Watching the wonder of the waning sunset

The sun’s glow became orange as the sun set deeper and the sky grew darker.  Soft rays reached out, stars came out, and the grassy dune in front of me was now a silhouette.  I noticed someone else taking pictures of the sunset, appearing very small in the distance at the peak of the dune.  The scale of the other photographer in relation to the expanse of the scene tells a wonderful story about  man’s place in our small corner of the universe.

Soft fall sunrise

There were patches of fog in the lower lying areas on this crisp fall morning.  As I drove south on Highway 77 in the Upper Peninsula the sun glowed brightly through the fog where it was thinner.  I stopped to take some photos.  I really liked how the warm brightness graduated to the cool blue sky where the fog was even thinner, and the trees were silhouetted as they fade into the distance.

Windy morning on Lake Superior

It had rained hard during the night and started clearing around sunrise.  The breaking clouds were beautiful blues, grays, and soft orange tones as they swiftly blew in off of Lake Superior.  White caps on the choppy waves could be seen far out onto the lake and as they rushed ashore.  Grand Marias’s north light station is on the horizon.  With this image, I wanted to capture the vastness of the view I had, of the broad expanse of the lake and big sky.
